The Romanian Association of Contemporary Art (ARAC), in partnership with Bucharest Municipality through ARCUB, announces the opening of the exhibition “Eyes flatten” by artists Emma Cossée Cruz, Camila Filipov, and Delia Popa, running from October 9–31, 2026, in ARCUB’s Sala Bolților.

Opening reception: Thursday, October 8, 6:00 p.m., ARCUB, Hanul Gabroveni, Sala Bolților, 50–53 Gabroveni Street, Bucharest

Concept and text: Georgiana Buț, artistic director: Anca Poterașu

The exhibition brings together three artists who reflect on the very act of seeing and its limitations in a contemporary society marked by the ubiquity of screens and two-dimensional communication. Their artistic gestures constitute renewed forms of vision and imagination.

The exhibition features a series of video works and installations—and is the result of a creative process that took place during an artist residency at the foot of the mountains, in the village of Slon in Prahova County. In August 2025, the three artists selected by curator Georgiana Buț—Emma Cossée Cruz (France/Chile), Camilia Filipov (Romania/Moldova), and Delia Popa (Romania)—were invited to spend time together and immerse themselves in the village’s landscape and culture.

Using video as a method of slow, observant discovery, they focused on the details, rhythms, and textures of the surrounding environment, which often go unnoticed. Organized by the META Cultural Foundation, the 8th edition of the “Magic Carpets” artist residency was part of the “Creative Europe” program, coordinated by the Kaunas Biennial, which was established in 2015.

This first public presentation of the works created during the residency highlights both the commonalities and the distinctive features of the three artists’ approaches:

Delia Popa’s work reminds us that the experience of landscape goes far beyond the simple act of seeing. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese practice of Shan shui hua (“painting of mountains and water”), she engages with conventional modes of landscape representation with patient perseverance, that takes into account their historical and cultural context, as well as their significance in a globalized present marked by multiple crises.

Camilia Filipov and Emma Cossée Cruz continue this reflection in complementary directions. Camilia’s use of minimal means and her meditative tone reconcile the ephemeral with the monumental, the intimate gesture with the infinite landscape, inviting a shift in attention in which the framing itself becomes an act of creation. Emma documents traditional textile craftsmanship, which she relates to the idea of a technological double. It operates on the boundary between reality and the virtual world, exploring the connection between naming, visualization, and understanding.

About the artists:

EMMA COSSÉE CRUZ (1990, France) is a Franco-Chilean artist who lives and works in Marseille. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she also studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and at UNA in Buenos Aires. Her installations, which combine photography, video, and sculpture, document or transform the devices that interact with our bodies and help shape our lifestyles, our imagination, and our desires.

About the artists:

DELIA POPA (1980, Bucharest) is a Romanian artist who lives and works in Bucharest and Crețești (Ilfov). She is one of Romania’s most important contemporary artists, known for her feminist approach to art. Her works include painting, drawing, printmaking, installations, videos, and performances. Currently, her research focuses on the representation of landscape and local topography, exploring connections to ecology and the rural environment.

CAMILIA FILIPOV (1990, Moldova) is an artist originally from the Republic of Moldova, now based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She studied sculpture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca and at the Saint-Luc Higher School of Arts in Liège, Belgium (Erasmus scholarship). Her artistic practice is based on the belief that the creative process is more important than the final result. Movement and stability represent a contrast that she often explores.

The exhibition is organized in partnership with the META Cultural Foundation and the Anca Poterașu Gallery, with support from the Litterallea Association.

Admission to the exhibition is free; hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 12:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.
