AFAR Residency in Maramureș, Romania, 20 June - 20 July 2024

I am pleased to announce my participation in an AFAR residency in the village of Săcel, in the Izei Valley, in the historical region of Maramureș.

The residency is centered around a textile art residency, around which artists Yana Bachynska, Zjeliko Beljan, Tanja Boukal, Anetta Mona Chisa and Shadin Kamruzzaman, together with guest artists Delia Popa, Loredana Ilie, Donald Simionoiu, Christina Zurfluh and Bernhard Frue, and weavers from Săcel, Gafia Burnar, Parasca Pitigau and Titiana Peter, will work, weave and adapt contemporary artistic practices in relation to the local community and heritage. The textile art residency will take place in the Izei Valley, where the artists will interact directly with local craftspeople, having the opportunity to learn traditional weaving, braiding and sewing techniques. The aim of the project is to get closer to local crafts, but to promote them in a contemporary and sustainable context. The artists participate in various activities, such as a sustainable textile dyeing workshop led by Dr. Florica Zaharia and Irina Petroviciu, where they search for plants and other natural elements from the surrounding area. There will be meetings with local artisans, guided tours and round tables on sustainability.

The textile art residency in Săcel, Maramureș, is part of a larger project AFAR - Artists for Artists Residency Network, which includes several artists, resulting in three exhibitions.
